Late basket wins it for West Virginia

TOP 25 MEN NO. 11 WEST VIRGINIA 88, NO. 10 TEXAS TECH 87

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Miles McBride made a goahead jumper with 6 seconds left and finished with a season-high 24 points, helping No. 11 West Virginia rally for a wild 88-87 victory over No. 10 Texas Tech on Monday night.

Jalen Bridges and reserve Sean McNeil each scored 13 points for West Virginia (11-4, 4-3 Big 12), which trailed by 12 points with about seven minutes left. Derek Culver had 10 points and nine rebounds for West Virginia.

Texas Tech (11-5, 4-4) wasted a stellar performanc­e by Mac McClung, who scored a season-high 30 points. Terrence Shannon Jr. added 15 points and eight boards.

McBride’s three-pointer with 1:36 left tied it at 8484, but McClung responded with his own three with 1:10 remaining.

Taz Sherman made a layup with 50 seconds to go and the Mountainee­rs got the ball back for one last chance. McBride drove the lane and made an off-balance shot over two defenders.

McClung missed a jumper at the buzzer, ending the Red Raiders’ first road loss in Big 12 play.

Sherman and Jordan McCabe scored 10 points apiece for West Virginia.

The Red Raiders hadn’t played since an eight-point home loss to Baylor on Jan. 16. Games last week against TCU and Iowa State were postponed due to covid-19 issues with those opponents.

West Virginia played its first home game in more than two weeks after its two previous home games were postponed due to covid-19 issues with the Mountainee­rs. After forcing 28 turnovers in its last game against Kansas State, West Virginia only forced two against the Red Raiders.

NO. 8 VIRGINIA 81, SYRACUSE 58

CHARLOTTES­VILLE, Va. — Sam Hauser hit seven of Virginia’s 14 three-pointers and the No. 8 Cavaliers cruised against Syracuse.

Hauser hit five threes before halftime as Virginia (11-2, 7-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) took a 41-26 lead into the locker room. He finished with 21 points.

With Jay Huff adding a career-high 21 points to go along with 12 rebounds and Trey Murphy III making four three-pointers on his way to 16 points, the Cavaliers finished 14 for 31 from deep. It was the seventh consecutiv­e victory for the 2019 national champions.

Quincy Guerrier led the Orange (9-5, 3-4) with 15 points, and Alan Griffin had 13. Syracuse was 5 for 24 from threepoint territory and just 22 of 59 overall (37.3%).

TOP 25 WOMEN NO. 14 OHIO STATE 88, NO. 7 MARYLAND 86

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Madison Greene scored 24 points, Jacy Sheldon had 21 and No. 14 Ohio State beat No. 7 Maryland.

Back-to-back three-pointers by Braxtin Miller put the Buckeyes up 75-69 with 4:22 left. The Terps missed 12 of their next 13 field-goal attempts, allowing the Buckeyes to build a lead down the stretch.

The Terps pulled within five on a pair of foul shots by Ashley Owusu with under a minute left. A late three-pointer by Chloe Bibby and another by Katie Benzan at the buzzer weren’t enough.

Miller scored 18 points and Dorka Juhasz had 16 rebounds as Ohio State (9-1, 5-1 Big Ten) handed Maryland (112, 7-1) its first conference loss of the season and snapped the Terps’ 24-game Big Ten winning streak going back to last January.

Owusu led Maryland with 33 points. Benzan had 22 on 7-for-12 shooting from three-point range.

SWAC MEN PRAIRIE VIEW A&M 73, ARK.-PINE BLUFF 56

Jeremiah Gambrell Jr. had a career-high 23 points as Prairie View A&M (5-4, 4-0 Southweste­rn Athletic Conference) beat the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (3-12, 2-4) on Monday night at H.O. Clemmons Arena in Pine Bluff.

D’Rell Roberts had 12 points for Prairie View, which earned its fourth consecutiv­e victory. Lenell Henry added 10 points and 12 rebounds, and Cam Mack had nine assists.

Jalen Lynn had 13 points for the Golden Lions, whose losing streak reached four games. Joshuwan Johnson added 12 points, and Shaun Doss Jr. had 10 points.
