CARNIVAL POSTPONED

Anchors won’t be aweigh any time soon for battered cruise line operator Carnival. The company’s planned seasonal service out of San Diego has been suspended until further notice, and cruises scheduled through April 2023 were canceled. Some trips from California to Hawaii will continue, but will sail from Long Beach instead. Trips that were planned on three ships — the Magic, Paradise and Valor — are being delayed until November. The virus pandemic has all but halted operations throughout the cruise industry. Carnival Corp. lost more than $10 billion last year, but said this month that it would have enough cash to survive through 2021 even with no revenue.

ALL ABOUT THE TUBMANS

Harriet Tubman could be on track to replace President Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill. Plans to put the 19th century abolitionist on the currency were shelved during the Trump administration and the Treasury Department instead focused on the redesign of the $10 and $50 bills. But President Joe Biden’s press secretary, Jan Psaki, said the new administration plans to move forward on the proposal. Janet Yellen was recently sworn in as Treasury secretary, the first woman to hold that position in the department’s over two-century-long history.

BUYING PRIVATE SPACE

Three men are paying $55 million each for a ride to the International Space Station. The private space crew will be led by a former NASA astronaut in a trip scheduled for next January. The private venture is being arranged by Axiom Space, an orbital spaceflight company based in Houston. The crew will spend eight days at the space station, and will take one or two days to get there aboard a SpaceX Dragon capsule following liftoff from Cape Canaveral. Other space companies like Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic and Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin plan to take paying customers on up-and-down flights lasting just minutes.
