■ Christine Cummings, president of a bird rehabilita­tion facility in Killingwor­th, Conn., said a brown pelican dubbed Arvy, which got blown off course and was rescued from the icy Connecticu­t River, was flown to a Florida sanctuary where it is recovering from pneumonia and frostbite with the help of 4 pounds of fish per day.

■ David Starnes Jr., 23, told Nashville, Tenn., police that he fatally shot Timothy Wilks, 20, in self-defense after Wilks and a friend approached with butcher knives at a trampoline park, with Starnes being unaware that the knife-wielders were participat­ing in a prank for a YouTube video, authoritie­s said.

■ Harland Earls, 29, of California was rescued by helicopter after emergency dispatcher­s tracked his cellphone to an unplowed road in the heart of the Tahoe National Forest, where he’d been stranded for a week after his pickup got stuck in deep snow.

■ Kevin Palmer, 34, was charged with murder after police in Wichita, Kan., said a 13-year-old girl who was sitting in the back seat of an SUV carjacked by Palmer tried to escape but was caught in the seat belt and dragged for several miles, killing her.

■ Jeffrey Fang’s 4-yearold daughter and 1-year-old son were found safe several hours after the minivan they were in was carjacked when their father jumped out to make a DoorDash delivery in San Francisco.

■ James Kobel, a deputy inspector and workplace harassment officer for the New York Police Department, will retain his pension but was fired over allegation­s that he made hateful comments about Black and Jewish people, women and the LGBTQ community on an anonymous online message board.

■ Lin Yang, 43, a former University of Florida professor and researcher who has returned to his native China, was indicted on six counts of wire fraud and four counts of making false statements after federal officials said he illegally obtained $1.8 million in grant money.

■ Michael Malone, 44, the founder of a defunct St. Louis charter school, was sentenced to 366 days in prison for wire fraud and ordered to repay $2.4 million in state money that he obtained by inflating student attendance numbers.

■ Tho Xaykosy, an Uber driver in Rhode Island, was on his way to pick up a passenger near Providence when out of nowhere “there was a cow there, just hanging out, waiting for the red light,” and he later learned that the 1,600-pound steer had escaped while being unloaded for slaughter.
