DR. MARTHA ANNA MARTIN OBITUARY
Dr. (PhD) Martha Anna Martin died Saturday, February 27, 2021, in North Little Rock, Ark. She was born in Little Rock January 29, 1940, to the late Aubert and Christine Martin of Warren, Ark., where she grew up and graduated from high school.
She is survived by her brother, Col. (USAF Retired) William Aubert Martin (Mary Lou), two nieces: Kathryn Gutierrez (Louie), and KarenCaster (Paul), a nephew, Michael Martin (Kerry); four great-nieces, and one great-nephew.
Martha attended Hendrix College and transferred to the University of Arkansas, where she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha and was very active in campus organizations. There she earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English and then began her academic career teaching at the University of Memphis. She developed an interest in rhetoric and earned a second master’s degree there. She earned a fourth degree at the University of Iowa, where she was awarded a PhD inrhetoric.
Martha taught for many years at the University of Alabama Birmingham and was highly thought of by her students. When health matters led to early retirement, Martha returned to Warren, Ark., where she helped care for her mother and several elderly aunts. She moved to Little Rock when her mother and an aunt entered a nursing home there. Through the years, Martha was involved with politics and civic and church activities, including the Stephen ministries at Second Presbyterian Church, where she was a member.
Graveside services: 11 a.m. Monday, March 8, at Oakland Cemetery with Rev. David Richey officiating. Burial in Oakland Cemetery by Frazer Funeral Home.
The family expresses thanks to the staff who cared for Martha during the last months of her life at Fox Ridge Assisted Living in North Little Rock.
