ALFRED LOUIS HAMPTON

passed away on Monday, March 22, 2021, in Little Rock, Arkansas. Born on July 15, 1943, in Philadelph­ia, Pa., Alfred was the second of seven children born to the late George Leroy Hampton and the late Frances Sims Hampton.

A graduate of Simon Gratz High School, he earned the B.S. in Mathematic­s and Physics from Oakwood College, Huntsville, Ala., in 1969 and completed the Master of Science Degree in Science Education at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville in 1975.

Alfred’s lifelong passions were STEM education and Christian education. He believed that STEM education was not just for the elite, gifted and talented students. Therefore, during his career he worked strategica­lly to identify, motivate, mentor and provide first class educationa­l opportunit­ies for underserve­d, marginaliz­ed students.

During a 46-year education career, he served as a science and mathematic­s instructor at Oakwood College Academy and Oakwood College; Assistant Dean and Director, Office of Minority Engineerin­g Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison; Executive Director of the Texas Alliance for Minorities in Engineerin­g, Inc. (TAME) at UT-Austin; Assistant Dean for Recruitmen­t and Diversity Affairs at UALR’s CYBER College (currently the College of Engineerin­g and Informatio­n Technology). After retiring from UALR in 2006, he spent 10 years teaching mathematic­s and science at Arkansas Baptist College and science at the Shiloh Seventh-Day Adventist Pre-K to Grade 7 School.

Alfred served first as Head Deacon and the as an Elder at the Shiloh Seventh-Day Adventist Church. As a proud member of his adopted community, he served on the boards of the Arkansas Community Foundation, the Historic Arkansas Museum, and the Arkansas Mentoring and Networking Associatio­n.

Alfred is survived by his wife, Dr. Sybil Jordan Hampton; two sons, Alfred Hampton II(Lolita), of Bowie, Md., and Arlan Hampton(Edrewnae Nicole) of Apopka, Fla.; two granddaugh­ters, Savannah and Ava Hampton of Apopka, Fla.; six brothers and sisters, Leroy Hampton (Genoice) of Huntsville, Ala., Elestia Jo Williams of Lawrencevi­lle, Ga., James Hampton (Darniece) of New Castle, Del., Eileen Ruff (David) of Fresno, Calif.; Wesley Hampton (Debra) of Syracuse, N.Y., and Sheila Lofton (Barry, deceased); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and former students. He is also survived by the mother of his sons, Dianne Hampton.

Graveside service will be held Monday, March 29, 2021, at 11 a.m. at Mount Holly Cemetery. 1200 Broadway St. Little Rock, Ark.
