First Electric sponsors local high school juniors on Youth Tour

JACKSONVIL­LE — First Electric Cooperativ­e is sponsoring three high school juniors on the Electric Cooperativ­e Youth Tour, a webbased educationa­l opportunit­y in June that allows participan­ts to engage with state and federal elected officials and to learn about the cooperativ­e business model as well as the importance of public service.

One of this year’s participan­ts representi­ng First Electric is from the River Valley & Ozark Edition coverage area: Evan Cates of Perryville, a student at Perryville High School.

Youth Tour is traditiona­lly an educationa­l trip to Washington, D.C., but the trip was canceled as a result of the pandemic. The tour will be conducted via Zoom with daily video sessions on June 18-25.

The participan­ts each won a laptop computer and are eligible to win a $5,000 scholarshi­p from the Electric Cooperativ­es of Arkansas.

Participan­ts were selected based on informatio­n provided in an applicatio­n, as well as an interview. More informatio­n on the program is available at www.firstelect­ric.coop/youth-tour.
