CLARKSVILLE — The 38 miners arrested near here Saturday night by Sheriff D. B. Bartlett and deputies on charges of night riding were held to the Johnson County Grand Jury this morning after they waived preliminary examination before Justice W. H. Langford. According to officers, the men had planned to meet at a local point near the north Spadra coal field, then march in a body to the strip pits and destroy the mines and machinery, and probably to attack the non-union workmen. Their plans were frustrated, however, when they became known to Sheriff Bartlett, who, with the deputies, went to the meeting point and arrested them.

ROGERS — An investigation is underway to determine the cause of death of seven cows in a pasture adjacent to the Fulton Sanitation landfill in the Pleasant Hill area. The seven cows were found Sunday afternoon in a spring-fed creek. They appeared to have been dead for several days, but were not missed until Sunday because owner Fred Merritt works during the week and tends his cattle on the weekend. Seven other cows were found alive on the other side of the pasture, according to area residents, but four other cows were missing. A vulture was found dead approximately 15 feet from the body of a dead cow. Area veterinarians told Merritt by telephone they could not perform an autopsy on the cows because of the length of time they had been dead. The vulture was frozen and taken to Fayetteville for analysis.

SMITHVILLE — A woman held police at bay for nearly 13 hours after she shot a man in the face with a 20-gauge shotgun Thursday, authorities said Friday. Beverly J. Perkins, 39, of Smithville was transferred Saturday to the George W. Jackson Community Mental Health Center in Jonesboro. Lawrence County authorities said Perkins was being questioned in the shooting of Thomas Kopp, 50, of Black Rock. Lawrence County sheriff’s deputy Glen Smith said the incident began about 6:30 p.m Thursday when Kopp went to visit Perkins at her home. “Apparently they got in some kind of argument,” he said. “We don’t know what over, but she shot him in the face with the shotgun.”

BRYANT — A Bryant convenience store clerk was arrested Wednesday and accused of stealing 174 Arkansas lottery tickets on Sept. 15, according to the Bryant Police Department. Jessica Lee Parker of Benton told investigators that she was not trying to steal “a lot of money” but was trying to find a $500 winning ticket because she was late on a car payment, a police news release said. Parker didn’t find a $500 winner nor did she take any money, a police spokesman said. Parker threw the non-winning tickets in the trash and scanned the winning tickets, but didn’t take money out of the cash drawers, the news release said.
