CONWAY — Jim Rawlins of Conway, Ark.,

died on May 22, 2022, in Primm Springs, Tenm. He was born September 29, 1928, in Atlanta, Ga., to Herbert A. Rawlins and Helen Looney Rawlins.

He married Ruth Marie Parmelee in 1952, was a social worker by profession, and an avid hiker and backpacker .Jim grew up in Decatur, Ga., and served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He was stationed in Boston, Massachusetts, where he met Ruth. He earned the B.S. from the University of Georgia, the M.S.W. from Tulane University, and worked with the juvenile justice system in Atlanta. In 1960, he moved to Little Rock, Ark., to serve as the Executive Director of the Presbyterian Child Care and Family Service Agency for the next 20 years. On retiring, he founded Forest Ventures, a hiking and backpacking organization. He enjoyed spending his retirement years traveling with Ruth in their motor home and volunteering with American Red Cross Disaster Services.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Parmelee Rawlins; his parents, Herbert A. Rawlins and Helen Looney Rawlins; brothers, Herbert A. Rawlins, Jr., Robert Rawlins, and Donald A. Rawlins; and grandsons, Matthew Wieland and Austin Hanchey.

Jim is survived by his daughters, Wendy R. Tuck (Steve), Parkersburg, W.Va., Pamela Rawlins, Conway, Ark., Holly R. Wieland, Conway, Ark., Jill R. Acree (Steve), Ada, Okla., and Faith R. Hanchey (Craig), Primm Springs, Tenn.; grandchildren, Andrew R. Tuck (Brandy), Martin P. Tuck, Elizabeth P. Tuck, Jeffrey D. Wieland (Mallory), Chloe’ M. Wieland (Jacob), Elizabeth P. Acree, and Claire H. Seguin (Kevin); and great-grandchildren, Ella Tuck, Monroe Tuck, Parker Tuck, Claudia Wieland, Isabella Wieland, Maya Wieland, and Charlie Austin Seguin.

Services will be held on Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at 10 a.m. at Ferncliff Camp and Conference Center, Little Rock, Ark. Memorials may be made to the Sierra Club or Ferncliff Camp.
