MARGARET ALICE SHOOK

passed peacefully in her home after a long and well-lived life on October 22, 2022. Born to Wendell and Luda Evans Nabors of Conway, Ark., on January 2, 1944, she resided in Little Rock for most of her 78 years.

Margaret, christened Magi by her high school band leader, graduated from Little Rock Central High School in 1962. She obtained her bachelor’s from the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, and went to Hattiesburg, University of Mississippi where she was awarded her Masters and ultimately, her PhD in Music Theory.

After a decade of running a home computer store with her first husband, Harry Mohrmann, in 1990 Margaret felt called to open her own school. Named The Academy for the Gifted and Talented, its purpose was to serve children with unique and specialized learning needs. As principal of The Academy, she was ahead of her time with a more relaxed and organic approach to learning. This included smaller classrooms, individualized curriculum, and extra recess. Though forced to close her school after 10 years when she developed breast cancer, she kept in touch with many of her students, most of whom went on to attend universities far and wide, and still think back fondly of their years under her tutelage.

A life-long musician, Margaret was a member of the Central Arkansas Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. She was also a woman of deep faith, which helped her survive against two years-long bouts with breast cancer. In addition to faithful church attendance and teaching Sunday school, Margaret was also the organist, and later choir director, for Pulaski Heights Presbyterian Church in Little Rock, and then the organist for All Souls Church in Scott.

While she had no church family at the time of her passing, Margaret was a shining light that touched all who knew her, and she will be dearly missed.

Margaret was predeceased by her parents; and younger brother, Phillip; her second husband, Thomas Shook; aunt, Dimple Flake; and her cousins, Suanna Davis and Joann Hammond.

She is survived by her daughter ,Ann Marie Mohrmann; cousins, Jo-Ed Woodward, Tim Evans, Jennifer Burnau, and Jodie Rexter; and nephews, Elliot and Lynn Nabors Morad.

A memorial will be held at Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Greenbrier, November 5th at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, or any charitable cause close to your heart. Arrangements are under the direction of RuebelFuneralHome.com
