SUN BELT/SWAC ARKANSAS STATE 12, UAPB 2

A seven-run seventh inning helped Arkansas State put the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff away in the teams’ season-opener Friday evening at Tomlinson Stadium in Jonesboro.

Tyler Jeans picked up the win for the Red Wolves, tossing 61/3 innings of 2-run ball, allowing 2 hits while striking out 7.

ASU (1-0) opened up an early lead with a hit-by-pitch and a walk in the second, then added three more in the third — Blake Burris doubled in a pair of runs and then scored on a sacrifice fly, part of a 2-for-6 night with five RBI and a three-run homer. Second baseman Wil French finished 3 for 4 from the leadoff spot, one of five Red Wolves with multihit outings.

The Golden Lions got both their runs in the seventh as Brad Mican singled down the right-field line. The Cedar Park, Texas, native had two of three hits for UAPB (0-1).

OHIO VALLEY UALR 9, SOUTH DAKOTA STATE 6

The University of Arkansas-Little Rock jumped all over South Dakota State Friday afternoon, scoring eight runs in the first two innings at Gary Hogan Field in Little Rock and giving itself a comfortabl­e advantage en route to a third season-opening win in the last four seasons.

Rogers native and Arkansas-Rich Mountain transfer Jackson Wells started and tossed four innings for the Trojans, allowing 1 earned run and 3 hits while striking out 7 Jackrabbit­s on 73 pitches. Austin Stubber and Jacob Weatherly pitched the final four innings after South Dakota State (0-1) closed to within 8-6.

UALR (1-0) was led offensivel­y by third baseman Nico Baumbach — a junior-college transfer who went 2-for4 with 2 RBI, a run and a walk — and Skyler Trevino, who opened the scoring with a three-run homer in the first inning.

ASUN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 11, CENTRAL ARKANSAS 3

The University of Central Arkansas got off on the losing foot Friday as it dropped its season-opener to Southeast Missouri at Bear Stadium in Conway.

SEMO (1-0) jumped out to an early 2-0 in the second inning when Brett Graber hit a two-RBI double off of UCA starter Trent Gregson (0-1).

Gregson lasted until the fourth inning when he was pulled after 32/3 innings with two runners on. Freshman reliever Lucas Greer took over and surrendere­d back-to-back RBI hits to make the score 6-0.

UCA scored twice later that inning on a Drew Sturgeon solo home run and a Kolby Johnson RBI double to pull back within 6-2.

SEMO nearly doubled its total in the sixth inning with three separate RBI hits to make it 11-2. UCA’s Dylan Cyr hit a solo home run on the first pitch of the seventh inning to make it 11-3.

Hunter Ralls (1-0) took the win for SEMO with 31/3 innings of relief, allowing 1 run, 2 hits and 1 walk.
