GEORGETOWN, Texas — Norman Keith Smith,

-

Jr., “Keith,” of Georgetown, Texas, died September 13, 2023, age 71, after a brief illness, with his family by his side. He was born February 6, 1952 in Pocahontas, Ark. to Norman K. Smith, Sr. and Jane Lee Bankson Smith. After graduating high school, he attended the University of Arkansas, and graduated with a degree in biology. Continuing his life-long love of learning, he followed this with several more degrees from the University of Wyoming, LSU, and concluded his studies with a doctorate from the University of Arkansas. Keith later married Ann Kirk of Brownwood, Texas. They have been happily together for 30 years.

Always a mountain man and lover of nature, he was happiest outdoors, usually birding, fishing for smallmouth bass in the Spring River with his father, or hunting with his grandfather, Bob Bankson. He will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor, his endless book recommendations, and his unique and endless patience. Although a quiet man, his friends all recount him as “the best storyteller.” Keith was a wonderful husband, a kind father, and a loving brother. He will be deeply missed. He is survived by his wife, Ann; his daughter, Allison; daughter-inlaw, COL Charlotte Hildebrand; sister, Melinda Raley; brotherin-law, Steve Raley; and niece, Robin; as well as extended family members. He is preceded in death by his parents. Moments after his passing, it began to rain, our sign that he was walking the mountains of Wyoming or marshes of Louisiana, binoculars in hand, his favorite dog, Kate, by his side, and a copy of A Sand County Almanac under arm. He will be remembered by family and friends in a private ceremony. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the National Audubon Society are welcomed.
