Ballot orders set for March election

Candidates for public offices in Pine Bluff and Jefferson County chose whether they could draw for their own positions on the ballot for the March 5 election or let a 9-year-old try to bring them luck.

It was not Jensen Hipp’s first time to draw positions for those who trusted him or those who were absent from Wednesday’s Jefferson County Election Commission. Jensen, whose father, Sven, is an election co-coordinato­r, took the polyhedral dice – one for every candidate in each race – and presented each position number to Election Commission Chairman Michael Adam before a nearly full commission office.

Listed in order of the determined ballot positions is each race for the preferenti­al primary, non-partisan and annual White Hall School District elections. The names as listed are not necessaril­y how they will be printed on the ballot (* indicates incumbent):

ACT 1013

Act 1013 of 2019 amended state law regarding which unopposed candidates must be listed on a ballot.

For general elections, the phrase “Unopposed Candidates” must appear on the ballot, permitting a voter to cast one vote for all unopposed candidates, although the candidates do not have to be listed. Candidates for governor, mayor, circuit clerk and non-judicial state elected officials (U.S. House, U.S. Senate, constituti­onal offices, state House and state Senate) must be listed.

For primary elections, all unopposed candidates except for school board and non-partisan judicial candidates must be printed on the ballot, but do not have to be listed separately.

Pursuant to the act, the following candidates will not appear on the ballot: State Supreme Court Associate Justice, Position 5, Shawn A. Womack*; Court of Appeals Associate Judge, District 7, Waymond M. Brown*; State District Judge, District 29, Division 1, Kim Bridgforth*; State District Judge, District 29, Division 3, Phillip Green*; and White Hall School Board, Position 2, R.D. Johnson*.
