Road-weary Tigers knock off Aggies

MEMPHIS 81, NO. 21 TEXAS A&M 75

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — David Jones scored 29 points and tied a career-high with five three-pointers to lead Memphis to an 81-75 win over No. 21 Texas A&M on Sunday.

Jones scored 21 points in the first half as Memphis (72) built a nine-point lead by halftime and didn’t trail in the second half.

“David was phenomenal,” Memphis Coach Penny Hardaway said. “He came to play. He made big shot after big shot. Can’t say enough about him.”

The Aggies scored five quick points, with a three-pointer from Manny Obaseki, to get within four with seven seconds left. But Jones made two free throws with five seconds to go to seal the win.

Memphis was up by eight with about eight minutes remaining when Caleb Mills made two three-pointers in a 6-2 run that extended the lead to 69-58 a couple minutes later.

It’s the second consecutiv­e win for the Tigers, after they lost their previous two, and wraps up a stretch of six on the road.

“We’re excited because we know what we just accomplish­ed … but man its our sixth game on the road, we’re kind of exhausted,” Hardaway said.

Obaseki had 21 points to lead Texas A&M (7-3), which lost for the third time in five games after opening the season 5-0. Aggies’ star Wade Taylor IV, the Southeaste­rn Conference preseason player of the year, had a tough day and finished with nine points. He made just 3 of 14 shots and missed all nine of his 3-point attempts.

“We weren’t terrible at anything,” Coach Buzz Williams said. “We just weren’t good enough.”

COLORADO 90, NO. 15 MIAMI 63

NEW YORK — Tristan da Silva scored 16 of his 22 points during a decisive second half to help Colorado pull away from No. 15 Miami in an NABC Brooklyn Showcase game at Barclays Center.

KJ Simpson scored 20 points while Luke O’Brien scored all 13 of his points during the game-ending 47-17 run for Colorado (7-2). J’Vonne Hadley, Eddie Lampkin Jr. and Julian Hammond III all added 11 points apiece.

The Buffaloes won without star freshman guard Cody Williams, who is day-to-day with a wrist injury.

Matthew Cleveland scored 17 points, Norchad Omier had 12 points and Wooga Poplar added 11 points for Miami (7-2).

Kamilla Cardoso scored 17 points and Te-Hina Paopao added 15 to help topranked South Carolina hold off No. 11 Utah 78-69 at the Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase in Uncasville, Conn. Freshmen MiLaysia Fulwiley and Chloe Kitts each added 11 for the Gamecocks (9-0), who have beaten four ranked teams this season. Alissa Pili made 15 of her 23 shots from the floor and finished with 37 points for Utah (8-2). … Lauren Betts had 22 points and 18 rebounds to help No. 2 UCLA beat No. 20 Florida State 95-78 at the Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase. Charisma Osborne and Angela Dugalic added 16 points each for the balanced Bruins (9-0). Ta’Niya Latson scored 26 to lead the Seminoles (7-3) while Sara Bejedi added 19. … Freshman guard Zoe Brooks turned in the second triple-double in school history, helping lift No. 3 North Carolina State over Liberty 80-67.
