Lady Bulldogs fall to Lady Panthers

- TANNER SPEARMAN

After taking an early lead Friday night, White Hall fell behind thanks to a flurry of deep shots.

The Lady Bulldog basketball team lost at home to Greenbrier 58-36 in nonconference action.

White Hall (6-5) started the game on an 8-0 run, forcing a Lady Panther timeout just over 3 minutes into the game.

Greenbrier (4-8) came alive from 3-point range after the break, connecting on 14 deep shots to pull away on the road.

White Hall coach Dustin Powell said the Lady Bulldogs didn’t adjust well enough to Greenbrier’s shooting.

“We’re used to running a 1-3-1 [zone],” Powell said. “That’s our bread and butter. That’s how we turn the ball over and get in transition. We weren’t closing out in the corner, so we tried to change it and get into a 2-3, a matchup 2-3, a little bit wide out. That didn’t work, either. So, we ended up going to man, which we’re not great at. Trying to make midgame adjustments, and we just didn’t adjust well.”

Greenbrier junior Destry Steele scored a game-high 17 points after making five 3-pointers. Fellow junior Jade Steele scored 13 points behind three 3-pointers.

Sophomore Kynnedi Barnett led the Lady Bulldogs with 15 points. She made three 3-pointers. The Lady Bulldogs started the game well with Barnett and fellow sophomore Kenedi Bowman each hitting shots to build an 8-0 lead. Steele hit her first 3-pointer after Greenbrier’s timeout. The teams traded shots as White Hall built its lead to 15-9 before the Lady Panthers took over.

Powell said the Lady Bulldogs played with more intensity in the

first few minutes.

“We were trapping tougher,” Powell said. “We were making passes harder to make. We were making them make longer passes, and we were able to run through some of those passes.”

Greenbrier took its first lead in the second quarter before Barnett tied it with a pair of free throws, but the Lady Panthers took a 2017 lead into halftime after junior Olivia Hart made a 3-pointer in the final seconds.

Beginning with that shot and continuing through most of the third quarter, Greenbrier pulled away with a 26-3 run. The Lady Panthers made six 3-pointers on this run, with Barnett hitting a 3-pointer for White Hall’s only points during this span. Barnett’s shot was also the only field goal White Hall made during the second and third quarters.

White Hall outscored Greenbrier 13-9 in the fourth quarter but never made a dent in the big lead en route to the Lady Bulldogs’ third straight loss.
