SWAC WOMEN UAPB 85, ALABAMA STATE 52

An overpoweri­ng first quarter sent the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff to a home victory Monday night at H.O. Clemmons Arena.

Maya Peat finished with 17 points as UAPB (7-8, 2-0 Southweste­rn Athletic Conference) obliterate­d its conference counterpar­ts. Coriah Beck scored 15 points, and Zaay Green ended with 14 points, 6 rebounds and 5 steals for the Golden Lions, who took a 33-12 lead into the second quarter after shooting 12 of 20 (60%) in the opening period. They shot 30 of 76 (39.5%) for the contest.

UAPB, which also got 11 points for Kourtney Rittenberr­y, continued to hold a large cushion throughout the first half and eventually coasted to its third consecutiv­e victory.

April Hooks scored 13 points, and Cordasia Harris had 11 points and 10 rebounds for Alabama State (1-12, 1-1). The Hornets shot 17 of 58 (29.3%), were outrebound­ed 46-31 and turned the ball over 32 times. Those miscues resulted in 35 points for the Golden Lions.

SWAC MEN ALABAMA STATE 83, UAPB 72

C.J. Hines scored 21 points as Alabama State continued its winning ways over the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff on Monday night at H.O. Clemmons Arena in Pine Bluff.

Four other players landed in double figures for the Hornets, who ran away in the second half after being locked in a 37-37 tie at halftime. Sean Smith tallied 14 points, Amarr Knox had 11 points and both T.J. Madlock and Isaiah Range compiled 10 points apiece in the win. It was also the fifth victory in the past seven meetings for Alabama State (7-9, 2-0 Southweste­rn Athletic Conference) over the Golden Lions.

Kylen Milton paced UAPB (5-10, 0-2) with 16 points and 10 rebounds. The Golden Lions trailed 71-68 with 3:13 left in the game but couldn’t dent the Hornets’ lead over the final minutes.

Rashad Williams had 14 points while Lonnell Martin and Joe French finished with 11 points each for UAPB.
