Big fourth quarter helps Greenwood

- LELAND BARCLAY

GREENWOOD — The Greenwood Bulldogs saved their best for last Thursday night.

The Bulldogs completed a rally from a 13-point second-quarter deficit with 24 points in the fourth quarter for a 63-53 win over Siloam Springs in 5A-West Conference play at H.B. Stewart Arena.

Greenwood (2-8, 1-2) trailed 28-15 in the second quarter, 34-31 at the half and 43-39 after three quarters before a barrage of three-pointers carried them to victory.

After A.J. Moore hit a three-pointer for Siloam Springs (6-12, 1-3) to open the fourth quarter, Braden Bollman, Jayden Garnes and L.J. Robins hit consecutive threes in a 58-second span for Greenwood’s first lead at 48-46 since leading 12-10 in the first quarter.

“We started hitting shots,” Greenwood Coach B.J. Ross said. “It’s contagious. You hit one, you hit two and that rim gets bigger and bigger. We’ve had a while where that rim kept getting smaller and smaller, but we know we can shoot. It’s just getting confidence. That was a big one.”

Stewart Schwaninger’s driving bucket for the Panthers tied the game, but Bollman swished another three-pointer and Brenden Chick turned a pass from Bollman into a driving layup for a 53-48 cushion with 4:20 left in the game.

Moore answered for Siloam Springs with a layup, but Bollman struck again with consecutive three-pointers, and Chick followed with a slam off a pass from Robins for a 61-50 lead.

Bollman finished with 22 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter, followed by Robins with 15, Chick with 12 points and eight rebounds, and Garnes with 11 points.

Schwaninger had 17 points and eight rebounds for the Panthers. Moore and Evan Allen each scored 12 points.

GREENWOOD 65, SILOAM SPRINGS 39

The Lady Bulldogs used a 7-0 run to open the game, a 13-0 run to take command and a 7-0 run to end the quarter for a 27-6 lead to earn Clay Reeves his 800th career coaching victory.

Greenwood (14-3, 3-0 5A-West) opened the second quarter with a 7-0 run and reeled off 15 straight points for a 49-10 halftime lead.

With the starters resting with a trip to Mountain Home looming tonight, Siloam Springs scored the first 23 points of the third quarter before Greenwood took a 52-33 lead into the final quarter.

“A lot of our players got a lot of playing time,” Reeves said. “We took care of things in the first half. The starters didn’t play any in the second half. They’re ready to go. I was hoping we would play well where we could rest them, and that worked out perfectly. Plus, it gives our other players more time. We accomplished two things; we worked on our depth and our starters got to rest.”

Anna Trusty scored 23 points with 13 in the first quarter and 10 in the second quarter. Kylah Pearcy added nine points, and Brooklyn Woolsey eight for the Lady Bulldogs.

Siloam Springs (8-11, 0-4) was led by Morgan Jones, who scored 12 points with 10 in the second half.
