100 YEARS AGO Feb. 13, 1924

SEARCY — A verdict of guilty was returned in the case of T. N. Sanders, Searcy merchant, of a charge of selling intoxicant­s, and punishment fixed at one year in the penitentia­ry. Sanders … has been under suspicion of officers for some time, having been arrested on a similar charge about two years ago, the case being nollepross­ed. … About two weeks ago, search of his grocery store resulted in the finding of several hundred bottles of Jamaica Ginger, bitters, and extracts, ranging from 45 to 93 percent alcohol. Sanders said that he drank the contents.

50 YEARS AGO Feb. 13, 1974

■ The state Pharmacy Board Tuesday suspended for six months the pharmacist’s license of Bill T. Briggs, of Hot Springs, because he couldn’t account for controlled drugs that were missing from his drug store. However, the Board said that Briggs, who said he had been unemployed since closing his store February 1, could apply for reinstatem­ent at the next Board meeting, May 17, if he had a job offer by then.

FAYETTEVIL­LE — Former Fayettevil­le alderman Stephen Miller and his wife pleaded guilty Thursday in Washington County Circuit Court to drug charges. Stephen and Janette Miller entered conditiona­l pleas and reserved the right to appeal an evidence-suppressio­n issue denied last month by Circuit Judge William Storey. … The couple pleaded guilty to “manufactur­ing” marijuana and possession of drug parapherna­lia. The state defines manufactur­e as the production, preparatio­n or processing of a controlled substance by extracting substances of chemical origin or by chemical synthesis or a combinatio­n of the two. The charges stemmed from 7.79 pounds of marijuana, six marijuana plants, two sets of scales, plastic bags, four rifles, a pistol and $5,680 cash found Oct. 23 in their 228 Mill Ave. home. Texas police arrested the Millers a day earlier north of Dallas with more than 3 pounds of marijuana in their rented car.

■ A Little Rock woman accused of setting a series of apartment fires last year confessed to starting half of the blazes when she was arrested this week, a federal arson investigat­or testified Wednesday. The woman, Lacey Moore, said she likely was behind the other fires but couldn’t remember because she was heavily drugged at the time. … The first four fires were set in pairs on Feb. 24 and Feb. 25 and again on May 15 and May 16. They occurred after midnight and were set in a garbage chute next to Moore’s apartment. … The May 16 fire led firefighte­rs to evacuate about 400 people from the apartment building. … The June 4 fire was set in an elevator and used PVC piping glue and mineral spirits … products that were stolen from the garage of Moore’s ex-husband, Jon Moore.
