Overpass concerns addressed
Dear Mahatma: When are they, the city or ArDot, going to do something about the Interstate 30 overpass on Scott Hamilton? The overpass and road are awful! — All Shook Up
Dear Shook: Any reference to Elvis is appreciated.
Let’s ask the Arkansas Department of Transportation, which is responsible for the maintenance of this overpass (and interstate overpasses in general).
Ruthie Berryhill of the agency tells us the good news — the overpass is structurally sound.
ArDot is looking into a treatment for the overpass called hydrodemolition, in which the top two inches of roadway are removed and replaced.
No timeline offered by Berryhill.
Drivers who go over this thing could go to idrivearkansas.com, a website operated by ArDot. Scroll over the Contact button in the upper right corner. Click on Report a Problem. Write something about the awful state of the overpass. An abundance of comments and complaints might have an effect. Our experience is that ArDot is very much sensitive to public opinion.
Vanity plate on a red Mini: JUSTFUN.
Dear Mahatma: The audacity. If you’re in a hurry to mail valentine cards at the Heights post office, all you need is a fancy car to park in the handicap spot. — Aggravating
Dear Aggravating: Thanks for sending a photo of a white Mercedes without a handicap license plate. And thanks for checking for a placard hanging from the rear-view mirror — there was none.
The only folks who may park in a handicap spot are those to whom the state has issued a disability license plate or placard. The former is screwed to the car. The latter should be displayed from the rearview mirror.
That’s it. Simple as can be. Oh, and when driving, take down the placard — it obscures the view out the windshield. Obstructing the view is a violation of Arkansas Code 27-37-304.
Dear Mahatma: Who authorized a parade permit with police escort? — Disgusted
Dear Dis: You reference an event earlier this month on Chenal Parkway. We were not there, but are told about 50 cars were in this parade in support of Palestinians. Also several Little Rock police cars were in the vicinity.
We queried Mark Edwards, who speaks for the LRPD. He confirmed a parade permit was needed and indeed was issued. LRPD’s role, he said, was to ensure the safety of all and to provide traffic control at intersections.
