UAPB routs Arkansas Baptist

Four big innings powered the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff to a fourth runrule win this weekend.

The UAPB baseball team defeated Arkansas Baptist 30-2 in seven innings Sunday at the Torii Hunter Baseball Complex to sweep the four-game series.

UAPB (6-2) scored 6 runs in the first inning, 9 in the second, 6 in the third and 7 in the fourth, continuing its high-scoring weekend in Pine Bluff.

Rightfield­er Jalyn Williams hit 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs and 3 runs. Edwin De La Cruz, Brandon Simon and Ven VanMaanen also finished with 3 RBIs each. Trinidad De La Garza scored 3 runs.

The Golden Lions delivered 24 hits, including several for extra bases. De La Cruz hit a 2-run home run in the first and Simon hit a 3-run bomb in the second. Williams hit two triples, while Lawrence Noble hit one. UAPB finished with seven doubles.

Jacob Ehling (1-0) got the win after a four-inning start. He struck out seven batters while allowing three hits and two walks.

Both of Arkansas Baptist’s runs, which came in the top of the fifth inning, were unearned. Three of UAPB’s runs were unearned. ABC committed eight errors, while UAPB made six.

In total, UAPB scored 97 runs while allowing 12 during the four-game series with the National Associatio­n of Intercolle­giate Athletics foe. UAPB has four more games against NAIA competitio­n on the schedule: two midweek games against Philander Smith and two against Williams Baptist.

The Golden Lions’ next seven games are against NCAA Division I opponents, starting next weekend with a three-game home series against Illinois State.
