STATE DIVISION I SOFTBALL

SWAC

ALCORN STATE 1-4, UAPB 0-1

A single run was all Alcorn State (9-26) needed to beat the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff in the opener of their doubleheader Saturday, but the Braves got a little more in Game 2 to complete the sweep at the Torii Hunter Complex in Pine Bluff.

Genise Wells’ sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth inning allowed Hannan Miller to score and give Alcorn State a 1-0 lead in Game 1. Braves pitcher Kiri Parker made that lead stand as she kept the Golden Lions’ bats quiet the rest of the way. She ended the outing with 11 strikeouts.

In the second game, Alcorn State opened up a 4-0 lead with Wells and Olivia Miller driving in runs. Jada Carhee’s single scored Jada Crusterson in the seventh for UAPB (15-17), but that was all the Golden Lions would get.

ASUN

CENTRAL ARKANSAS 1-8, NORTH ALABAMA 2-0

The University of Central Arkansas split its doubleheader with North Alabama Saturday at Farris Field in Conway, throwing a five-inning no-hitter in the second game.

In the first game, North Alabama (2714, 8-6 ASUN) scored runs in the second and third innings off UCA starter Bailie Runner (8-10) to take a 2-0 lead.

The Bears (17-23, 8-6) got one run back in the sixth inning, when Lilly Hood drove in Renee Christian with a single to center field to make it 2-1.

UCA was held to four hits and five total baserunners in the loss.

The second game looked to be much of the same for the Bears through three innings as Tremere Harris was the lone player to reach base safely, not including Lions errors.

In the fourth inning, UCA scored two runs thanks to a RBI single by Erin Michael and a catcher’s interference.

UCA starter Julia Petty (9-9) struck out the side in the top of the fifth inning to complete five no-hit innings, while her teammates tacked on six runs in the bottom half of the inning on four hits and three walks to win 8-0.
