Service or slavery?

-

Editor, The Commercial,

Compulsory “community service” cannot be legally imposed in Arkansas unless for punishment on conviction of crime; otherwise it is slavery.

The LEARNS Act requires 75 hours of it to graduate. But it is not required of private school students. Only for public school students. That’s both illegal and inequitable.

Parochial schools are religious schools. That’s what parochial means. Our taxes are being required for parochial school vouchers. Voluntary community service is good — compulsory is illegal here in that context.

We can’t be taxed to pay for abortions since that is regarded as irreligious and immoral by many. I agree with the prohibition.

So why are we being taxed to support religious schools who teach doctrines we may strongly disagree with?

The governor’s edict forbids teaching complete and factual history of our nation and state in our schools. Lying to the students about history overtly, or by omission, is reprehensible!

Considering her history in the Trump debacle, perhaps lying isn’t viewed by her as immoral any longer. It still is, in the view of most decent folks. With the laws shoved through by her and her cabal that are not in our interest — where are the lawyers who should challenge them in courts and expose her for what she is?
