Tomo approved as Eagles new head football coach

The Middletown High School South football program has its successor to legendary head coach Steve Antonucci.

Marc Tomo, Antonuucci’s defensive coordinato­r the last two seasons, was approved as the Eagles’ head coach Monday night by the Middletown Township Board of Education, Middletown District Athletic Director Rich Carroll said.

Antonucci resigned in January after 26 highly successful seasons.

The Eagles won 220 games and six NJSIAA sectional championsh­ips, including four straight from 20032006 under Antonucci.

Tomo, a 2003 Ocean Township High School graduate, was a linebacker/offensive lineman during his scholastic career and an assistant coach at Ocean for 11 seasons.

He was an assistant to Antonucci the last five seasons. He was also an assistant coach at Albright University for one season. Tomo played collegiate football at Monmouth University.

Middletown South’s 10 sectional titles are the second most in the Shore Conference behind Manasquan, which has 12.

Middletown South went 5-5 last season. Standout linebacker/defensive end/running back Colin Gallagher and quarterbac­k/defensive back/placekicke­r/ punter Jake Czwakiel are among those who will graduate in June.

Matt Walsh, who was a quarterbac­k at Middletown High School South from 2003-2005, where he was a teammate of running back Knowshon Moreno and linebacker Nick Macaluso, has been named to succeed Jay Graber as Matawan’s head coach.

Under Graber over five seasons, Matawan went 2123 with playoff appearance­s the last two seasons. Walsh was Matawan’s defensive coordinato­r-defensive line coach the last two seasons Matawan went 4-6 last season, but has most of its team returning, including Rutgers University offensive line recruit Jayden Elijah. Walsh has also been an assistant coach at Raritan, Holmdel and Rumson-Fair Haven. Rumson-Fair Haven won four sectional championsh­ips during Walsh’s time on the staff.
