SPRING LAKE - It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Bill “Pepper” Dooley, who departed this world on April 10, 2024 at the age of 88. He was born on March 14, 1936, in Elizabeth, New Jersey, to the late William and Helena Dooley.

Pepper grew up in Elizabeth and attended Thomas Jefferson High School, where he showcased his athletic prowess as he led his basketball teams to remarkable victories at the Union County and Group IV State Championsh­ips. Following his high school achievemen­ts, Pepper earned a scholarshi­p to St. Peter’s College, where he continued to excel in basketball. His leadership skills shone bright as he led the team to their first two NIT appearance­s, earning accolades such as All-NIT Tournament Team, All Metropolit­an Team, and Catholic All American during his senior year.

After college, Pepper served his country with honor in the US Army, coaching and playing for the Fort Benjamin Harrison basketball team, securing the Fifth Army Championsh­ip and the MVP award. Upon returning to civilian life, Pepper settled on the Jersey Shore, where he dedicated himself to a career in Sales and Management until his retirement.

Pepper is survived by his three daughters, Lisa, Janet, and Kathleen, along with seven grandchild­ren and one great-grandchild. He is predecease­d by his loving partner, Sarah Leonard. Mr. Dooley was a beloved member of our community who passionate­ly served those in need, offering support and guidance to individual­s on their journey to recovery. He found joy in traveling, conversati­on, and all things basketball.
