WHAT WAS THE FIRST PIECE OF MIDCENTURY FURNITURE YOU PURCHASED? For me, it was my turquoise vinyl-upholstered footstool with tapered legs. While wandering a thrift shop looking for a vintage end table I spotted its bright upholstery—it was just barely peeking out from beneath a pile of boxes. The little tear where the piping had pulled away didn’t bother me because I was so entranced by the looping design imprinted on its top.

Despite not being what I had set out for, at just $12 I knew it needed to come home with me. Since that day, it’s bounced all over my house. For a while it sat in front of my arm chair and made for an idyllic reading corner—but I can’t seem to let it stay in one place too long. Its bright hue and perfectly retro silhouette brings me so much joy that I want to feature it in every room. It’s sat beside the sofa, at the foot of the bed, hosted a split-leaf monstera, been pulled out for game nights around the coffee table and became a favorite napping place for an otherwise mischievous puppy.

The stories in this issue of Atomicranch are similar—they celebrate the love of mid mod furniture. You’ll meet homeowners who have curated an amazing collection of midcentury furnishings—and went so far as to make their own mailbox (page 30). Then you’ll step into a home where midcentury style meets comfort and function for a busy family of four (page 42). If you’re looking for a restoration with amazing woodgrain and dreamy vintage finds, turn to page 58. Last but not least—does Herman Miller ring a bell? Dive into the history and learn why the designs this company produced endure the test of time (page 54).

What’s not to love about a great piece of midcentury furniture?
