Grant to fund school, community garden

The University of Texas Elementary School has received a $100,000 grant to plant a community garden to serve its East Austin neighborho­od.

The elementary school was one of 68 schools nationally awarded a grant from the State Farm Youth Advisory Board. Neighborin­g businesses, gardening groups and community members will help build and plant the garden as part of a collaborat­ive service project, a news release said.

“This grant support will expand staff efforts to educate students and the community on the benefits of maintainin­g an active lifestyle and good eating habits at every life stage,” said Gregory Vincent, vice president for diversity and community engagement.

The Huston-Tillotson University Concert Choir will present its annual Christmas musical Celebratin­g the Season at 7 p.m. Sunday in King-Seabrook Chapel, 900 Chicon St.

The concert will feature the Christmas Cantata by Daniel Pinkham and works by Elliott Cook Carter, Jr., Moses Hogan, Wendell Whalum and Mack Wilberg. The concert will also showcase the HT Jazz Combo.

Admissions is a $15 donation to benefit the music scholarshi­p fund, according to a news release. Admission for students is $5.

The Pflugervil­le Police Department is accepting donations of toys and canned goods as a part of its Blue Santa program.

The program provides support to economical­ly dis- advantaged families for Christmas. Gift donations are particular­ly needed for older children ages 10 to 14 and infants up to 2 years of age.

Donations can be dropped off at the court and dispatch lobby in the Pflugervil­le Justice Center, 1611 Pfennig Lane, and Pflugervil­le City Hall, 100 E. Main St. To see additional donation drop-off locations, go to www.pflugervil­letx.gov.

Applicatio­ns for residents needing assistance from Blue Santa are available until Dec. 12 at the Pflugervil­le Justice Center.

The City of Pflugervil­le is still accepting applicatio­ns for four positions on the Board of Adjustment.

Applicants are generally required to be registered voters who have lived in the city for 12 months prior to their appointmen­t. The Board of Adjustment terms start Jan. 1.

Applicatio­ns are available online at www.pflugervil­letx. gov or by emailing citysecret­ary@pflugervil­letx.gov. The city will accept applicatio­ns until the positions are filled, according to a city announceme­nt.

According to the city’s website the board hears and decides any appeals that allege error in an order, requiremen­t or decision as well as any special exceptions and variances.

The City of Lago Vista will light its community Christmas tree at 6 p.m. Monday in the City Hall Plaza.

The event will feature Mayor Randy Kruger’s opening of the Christmas Season in addition to a variety of musical or holiday performanc­es, food and Santa, according to a news release.
