A school bus driver was arrested Friday after police say he assaulted a 9-year-old Leander school district student this month. Helmut Derer, 67, was charged with injury to a child, a third-degree felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

On Dec. 5, Cedar Park police responded to a report of a disturbance on a school bus in the 200 block of Capulin Mountain and were told by two students that the driver had assaulted one of the students.

Police said investigators later determined that Derer pushed the 9year-old down into a seat causing him to strike his head against the side of the bus, and then used his knee to strike the
