On Feb. 22, Gabrielle Nestande received a recommended sentence of 10 years of probation in the hit-and-run death of Courtney Griffin. According to an AmericanStatesman investigation, the sentence is not unusual, and people convicted of killing someone with their vehicle and fleeing the scene often receive no prison sentence — at times, even if they’d been drinking.

Sarah Marshall: So what this tells me is that if I’m drunk & hit someone with my car, I should just drive away bc you can’t prove I was drunk hours later when I turn myself in. Ridiculous!

David Ring: The problem is that she is not a monster. She is someone that made a mistake. We’ve all made mistakes yet her mistake is made out to be so much more than that. It’s just a mistake with tragic consequences, but the consequences don’t change the fact that it was a simple mistake. ... I am glad to see the jury hold the DA to the standard of “beyond a reasonable doubt.”

Sara DeShong: Moments of “panic” showcase who one really is — and her decision to leave showed society that she was incapable of true responsibility. She deserves a real punishment.

Sissy Phancypants: The laws that want to prove if you’re intoxicated instead of focusing on the evidence that you and your car were the cause of someone’s death are desperately flawed. We are all in trouble if it’s okay to kill someone with a vehicle as long as you run and then lie if you get caught.
