The University of Texas softball team fell 8-3 to Arizona State on Friday morning at the Judy Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif.

Lindsey Stephens and Erin Shireman each went 3-for-4 to lead the Texas offense.

But seven runs for the Sun Devils through the first two innings was enough to hold off the Longhorns.

The Sun Devils (23-3) scored two runs on a Haley Steele single in the first inning.

Texas (14-10) scored when Mandy Ogle drove in Holly Kern from third base in the top of the second.

A bases-loaded single by Chelsea Gonzales put the Sun Devils up 3-1 before Amber Freeman hit a grand slam to break the game open.

Freeman hit her second home run in the bottom of the fifth to round out the scoring for the Sun Devils.

Texas pitcher Gabby Smith (8-2) took the loss.

Arizona State’s Mackenzie Popescue (12-1) earned the win.

Tiarra Davis, who earned a complete-game win late Thursday, struck out eight, allowed no walks and one run on two hits in relief of Smith.

Shireman and Kelli Hanzel drove in the last two runs for Texas.

Texas will next take on Michigan, followed by Washington, on Saturday at the Classic.

Men’s golf: Toni Hakula shot an even par 72, including three straight birdies, to lead the Longhorns in the first day of the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters in Las Vegas on Friday.

Hakula sits two strokes behind first-round co-leaders Wyndam Clark (2 under) and Carl Jonson (2 under).

The No. 17 Texas team is in eighth place at 20-over par. UNLV leads the 15-team field at 1-over 289.

Texas’ Beau Hossler finished the day at 4-over 76 to tie for 26th place.

Kramer Hickok and Gavin Hall are tied for 52nd at 8-over 80, and Brax McCarthy is tied for 75th at 12-over 84.
