Last week, groups opposed to campus carry began running ads on TV and online urging opposition to two bills proposed in the Texas Legislature that would allow those with a concealed handgun license to carry weapons in university classrooms, dorms and other buildings.

Kenneth Bloomer: There should be some limits to the Second Amendment. But not too many. I fail to see why a campus needs to be a place where Constitutional rights would be suppressed.

Wayne Leggott: Going to be a lot of educators taking an early retirement if this passes.

Ed Lyn: My rights don’t stop because I enter the campus. It’s pretty simple, actually.

Carolyn M. Appleton: Personally, it scares me. Some experts discussed this during SXSW Edu. Safety experts say few have presence of mind to use guns properly during emergencies.

Ray O’Neal: This is pushing what is not wanted. It doesn’t matter if its religion, guns, drugs or whatever. Let these places decide for themselves.

Lois Ferrari: Question: If this bill does pass, can I still refuse to allow guns in my classroom? I teach at a private liberal arts university.

Greg Heilers: Many will opine that the average college student lacks the maturity and life experiences to be trusted with the privilege of carrying a firearm. Fine. Just be consistent with that opinion. If they lack the maturity to be trusted with a firearm, then they also lack the maturity to be trusted with the privilege of voting.
