Calling all ruthless pragmatists!

On this week’s “Statesman Shots” podcast, Mark Updegrove — author, historian and director of the LBJ Presidential Library — joins us to talk about his book “Destiny of Democracy: The Civil Rights Summit at the LBJ Presidential Library” and President Lyndon Baines Johnson’s legacy in pop culture and beyond. We ask him what he thought of LBJ’s depiction in the film “Selma,” what it’s like to organize an event involving four U.S. presidents and whether George W. Bush and Bill Clinton gave each other the stink eye during said event. (They didn’t!)

Co-hosted by Austin Eavesdropper blogger Tolly Moseley and Statesman tech culture writer Omar L. Gallaga, “Shots” is available at the statesman.com/shots blog as an audio download or stream and on iTunes and SoundCloud. You also can view a video segment from each episode on the blog.

Also on this week’s episode:

Have you ever done a race? In a video Short Shot segment, we bring back “The Enabler” to talk each other into a variety of 5Ks and marathons: the New Braunfels Dash ‘n Splash Fun Run, the Color Run 5K, and the Boston Marathon. We were inspired by the American-Statesman’s Cap 10K, but inspired enough to actually run ourselves?

How does Austin culture change during presidential elections? We talk about lawmakers in the 21st century and how their actions affect the mood of our city.

Joe Gross discusses “Daredevil,” the new Netflix series based on the Marvel comics of the same name, in a Chaser segment.

And in A Toast, we recommend the crystallized-in-the-1980s Playland Skate Center, the reality show “Vanilla Ice Goes Amish” (this is real), and health and good vibes on the Greenbelt.
