Consistency still elusive
With six points in four games, team disappoints itself.
As an expansion team, the Austin Aztex have trotted out any number of lineups, formations and tactics for the first four games. The result? Two up and two down.
“Now it’s time to find some consistency,” sai d coach Paul Dalglish. “The trial-and-error phase is over.”
Austin makes a rare early seas on trip this week, playing the Los Angeles Galaxy II on Sunday, one of only two road matches in the first eight games for the new USL franchise.
Team captain Lance Rozeboom, who has more professional experience than most on this team, said the 2-2 record is “a bit disappointing ,” especially because Austin has been shut out in its last two home games.
“Six points in four games is respectable, but we expect more from ourselves,” said the holding midfielder.
“We’ve been pulling strings a little bit, searching for the right combos, and I think we’re cl ose to settling on some things. ”
Rozeboom, 25, a former D.C. United second-round draft pick who has some MLS experience, recently took over the captain’s armband from center-back Kyle Hoffer.
“We have several guys who could be captain, ” Rozeboom said. “This is a group that doesn’t need a lot of coaxing or prodding. There are no prima donnas here.”
Dalglish, who favors a 3-4-3 offensive style, has tried a 4-3-3 and some hybrid looks. With four goals in four games, it’s safe to say he hasn’t gotten what he wanted.
“You get a few surprises,” he said. “Some things have worked better than others. I’m stressing tempo and pace to the guys.”
Forward Kris Tyrpak has two of the four goals and just missed on a few others. His role is secure. Tony Rocha is the midfielder who creates the most chances and appears safe.
But Dalglish has to sort out his other two forwards from a group that includes Sainey Touray and Trevin Caesar, who each have a goal, Andres Cuero, Brendan King and Drew Yates.
