Arteaga-Pichardo’s father lives in Webbervill­e and has been notified of his death, Diana Arteaga said.

“I can’t even imagine how his dad must feel,” she said. “I’m sure he’s just in pieces, wishing it was a dream.”

Diana Arteaga said the family is finalizing arrangemen­ts through the Mexican Consulate in Austin to have Arteaga-Pichardo buried in Mexico, where his mother, two sisters, son and girlfriend live. They were all notified of his death Tuesday night.

On a Facebook page dedicated to the rescue efforts, Brooke Hovey of Austin, released a statement on Wednesday that was issued by the family:

“As you can imagine, our family is absolutely devastated. We ask for your privacy as we grieve as a family and continue to pray for the swift recovery of our other loved ones. We thank you for your incredible support, love and prayers at this difficult time.”

The Charbas, Careys and McCombs are prominent families in Corpus Christi. Charba graduated with a bachelor of arts in government from the University of Texas in May 1994, according to university records. She was an avid Longhorn fan, traveling for years to Austin to catch the football games.

Charba also was an civic volunteer, even serving on several boards alongside some of her former students.

“She was such a great role model and the friend you always wanted to have,” said Forenthold, who traveled from Corpus Christi to San Marcos Wednesday to volunteer. “She has left such a hole in all of our hearts.”
