Austin Internet startup Knowingly Corp. has purchased technology news website GigaOm and plans to relaunch it in August, company executives said.

Knowingly said it acquired a portion of the assets of GigaOm, which abruptly shut down in March due to financial troubles.

GigaOm was founded in 2006 by writer Om Malik as a technology blog and focused on news, analysis and coverage of emerging technology.

Financial terms of the deal, which included the GigaOm site and content library, were not disclosed. GigaOm also operated an events and research business, which was not included in the purchase.

Knowingly was founded last year by tech entrepreneur Byron Reece, who was previously chief innovation officer of Demand Media. Based in Santa Monica, Calif., Demand is a content and social media company that operates websites including eHow.

Reese also was CEO of

Austin-based PageWise Inc., an online media firm that ran ExpertVillage.com, a website with thousands of how-to videos.

In a written statement, Reese described GigaOm as “second to none in what it does. We are excited to be a chapter of the GigaOm story and look forward to continuing its mission of humanizing the impact of technology.”

Knowingly offers websites and services including iforetold.com, a site where people can log predictions about the future and Correctica, a tool that finds errors in documents and websites.
