Injury will idle Cards’ Adams

-

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Matt Adams will be out indefinitely with a strained right quadriceps, an injury that could require surgery.

“It’s going to be a while,” general manager John Mozeliak said Wednesday. “This is not something that’s going to be 15 days.”

The injury is the latest blow for the Cardinals, who led the National League with a 30-16 record a month after losing ace Adam Wainwright to a torn left Achilles.

The 26-year-old Adams was injured running on a double in the fifth inning Tuesday night against Arizona. Mozeliak said the player felt a “pop.”

Catcher Ed Easley was recalled from Triple-A Memphis before Wednesday’s game against the Diamondbacks.

Yankees: Alex Rodriguez’s three-run homer off Royals right-hander Chris Young in the third inning of Wednesday’s 4-2 win at Yankee Stadium gave him 1,995 career RBIs, passing Lou Gehrig (1,993) for third on the all-time list.

“It’s definitely an honor to be mentioned in the same breath as Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth,” Rodriguez said. “It is any player’s dream; especially it is even more special to do it here at home at Yankee Stadium.”

Next on the list is Barry Bonds at 1,996. Hank Aaron has the all-time lead with 2,297.

Orioles: Outfielder Alejandro De Aza was designated for assignment before the Orioles’ game against the Astros. Infielder Ryan Flaherty was activated from the 15-day disabled list after a right groin strain.

De Aza, 31, batted .214 with three home runs and seven RBIs in 30 games with Baltimore this season.

De Aza was earning $5 million this year after losing an arbitration hearing.

Angels: Acquired outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis from the Mets for cash. The 27-year-old Nieuwenhuis had appeared in 27 games.
