Strong pitching leads Lake Travis in opener

Pitchers Tate Sanford and Tate Gillespie teamed up to help Lake Travis defeat Dallas Jesuit 3-2 Thursday night, giving the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead in the Class 6A regional semifinal series.

Sanford pitched 6 1/3 innings at Concordia Texas University to earn the win. He allowed one earned run and five hits while striking out five. Gillespie picked up the save.

Sanford’s fifth strikeout proved to be the biggest of the game as it halted a two-run rally by Jesuit in the fifth inning.

Lake Travis (25-7-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Chris Roller scored on a single by Brad Demco. The Cavaliers added two more in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead. Jared Triolo scored on a sacrifice fly by Jordan Markim, and Chris Funk’s single drove in Demco.

Jesuit (31-3-2) scored after Bryce Bonner and Austin Sheahan singled to open the fifth. Bonner eventually scored on a wild pitch before Sheahan came home on a passed ball.

Game 2 of the best-of-three series is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday at Jesuit. If a third game is needed, it will be played at 11 a.m. Saturday at Baylor.

Georgetown 13, Mission Veterans Memorial 1: Georgetown jumped ahead 1-0 in a best-of-three Class 5A regional semifinal matchup. The Eagles will try for the sweep on Friday night, when the teams are scheduled to meet at Calallen High in Corpus Christi.

Banquete 3, Lago Vista 2 (13 innings): Banquete gained the upper hand in a Class 3A regional semifinal series, outlasting Lago Vista in an extra-innings contest in San Antonio. Game 2 of the best-of-three matchup will be a 11 a.m. Saturday at Wolff Stadium in San Antonio. A third game would follow if needed.

Softball

Vista Ridge 3, Flour Bluff 1: Vista Ridge remained unbeaten in the Class 5A playoffs, running its postseason record to 8-0 by topping Corpus Christi Flour Bluff in Beeville to open a best-of-three regional final.

The Rangers (27-2-1) will try to complete a sweep on Friday, when the series resumes at 6 p.m. at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin. If needed, a third game would follow immediatel­y after the end of Game 2.

Needville 6, Liberty Hill 3: Liberty Hill trails 1-0 in its Class 4A regional final playoff se- ries, which continues Friday at Mumford High.

The Lady Panthers gave up four runs in the second inning, and Needville had expanded its lead to 6-0 after five.

Liberty Hill scored three runs over the final two innings, all coming on home runs.

Game 2 of the best-of-three series is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Hallettsvi­lle 3, Florence 0: Hallettsvi­lle won the opener of a Class 3A regional final series, scoring three times in the fifth inning at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin.

Florence, which has won five eliminatio­n games this postseason, will need to win two more to reach the state tournament. The best-of-three series is scheduled to resume at 6 p.m. Saturday at Texas Lutheran.
