With ROT Biker Rally in town, ‘hog days’ of summer are here

- American-Statesman staff

After nearly two weeks of weather more typical to an Austin summer than the dousing doldrums of May, chances of rain return to the area this weekend.

As National Weather Service meteorologist Corey Van Pelt put it: “Once June started, it turned to summer.”

On the streets

On Saturday, conditions should be ripe for some daytime riding. There’s a 20 percent chance of rain that increases in the afternoon, when isolated storms could drop as much as a quarter-inch of rain. The high Saturday will be in the lower 90s with a heat index hovering around the century mark. Stay hydrated.

On the lakes

Lakes Travis and Buchanan — both up last month — showed little change over the past week. Combined, the lakes are about 68 percent full, according to the Lower Colorado River Authority.

On the roads

Riders en route to the Republic of Texas Biker Rally from North and West Texas should be just fine as they make their way into town, the weather service said. Folks headed out of town, howev- er, should note that East Texas continues to see rain.

On the horizon

That low pressure system in East Texas is headed this way, drawing Gulf moisture with it and the chance for about a half-inch of rain by Monday. Storm chances increase Tuesday and Wednesday, when flash flooding could be a concern.
