Tirade costs Twins’ Hunter 2 games

- Wire services

Major League Baseball suspended Twins outfielder Torii Hunter on Friday two games for his eighth-inning tirade Wednesday night.

Hunter, who also was fined, is appealing the suspension and was in the lineup Friday night against Texas.

“I didn’t expect two games,” Hunter said. “I got ejected, so I knew something was going to come down.”

Hunter was unhappy with a called third strike by plate umpire Mark Ripperger. Hunter showed his displeasure by taking off his uniform and throwing it. Hunter had to be separated from Ripperger by crew chief Jeff Kellogg.

Athletics: Switchpitcher Pat Venditte was put on the disabled list with a right shoulder strain. Venditte, called up a week ago to become the first full-time ambidextrous pitcher in the majors since the 1880s, could still throw left-handed only, but his biggest weapon (the abili- ty to get out a right-handed batter as a righthander) would be gone.

Giants: Right fielder Hunter Pence (left wrist) went on the disabled list for the second time this season. He sustained a fractured forearm during spring training and did not make his season debut until May 16.

Cardinals: Righthander Lance Lynn was put on the 15-day DL with a forearm strain, and lefty Tyler Lyons will be recalled to start today against the Royals.

Tigers: Starting pitcher Shane Greene (46 with a 5.82 ERA in 13 games) was sent down to Triple-A Toledo. Left- hander Ian Krol was recalled from Toledo.

Nationals: Activated newly acquired reliever David Carpenter after placing right-hander Aaron Barrett on the 15day disabled list with a strained right biceps.

Red Sox: A Massachusetts woman who was seriously hurt when a broken bat flew into the stands at Fenway Park last week was released from a hospital Friday.

Noteworthy: Lefthander Erik Bedard, 36, announced his retirement after an 11-year major league career. Bedard went 71-82 with Baltimore, Seattle, Boston and Tampa Bay. ■ France vs. Colombia, Fox ■ England vs. Mexico, Fox ■ Brazil vs. Spain, FS1 ■ South Korea vs. Costa Rica, FS1
