The Road Relics, the Central Texas region chapter of the Antique Automobile Club of America, is planning a Father’s Day car show Sunday, June 21, with hundreds of classic automobiles.
The event is free to spectators and exhibitors.
Organizer Greg Herbert has been involved in the annual show for 15 years and said the turnout is usually pretty massive.
“It was just a way to get our cars out and give people the opportunity to come see them,” Herbert said of the show’s origin. “The first year we started with 30 cars and probably 30 spectators. Now we average about 350 cars each year for the show and thousands of spectators.”
It takes a big lot to host 350 cars, and the show will be held in the parking lot of the John H. Winters building at 701 W. 51st St. in Austin. The exhibit hours are from noon to 4 p.m.
There will be concessions on-site, but primarily the focus of the show is on the cars themselves.
“Our club is into the restoration and preservation of cars, in other words, ‘as original,’ ” Herbert said. “It’s antique cars, so it’s technically anything over 25 years old. Most of them are a lot older than that, but some of them are ‘80s cars these days. For this show we actually include the modified cars, street rods and slightly modified cars and that kind of stuff along with the originals.
“So it’s a real mixture of cars and a mix of people. Our goal is just to get the cars out and get the people to come see them. I want younger kids and such to enjoy the hobby … to learn about the history and see the difference between a Model T and a Mustang.”
