New classic car meet-up forms in Marble Falls

-

Classic Car enthusiasts in Austin have another option for a short drive out of town to hang out with like-minded antique fans at a new meet-andgreet group in Marble Falls.

Storm’s Drive-In is now hosting a Classics at the Classic meet-up on the first Saturday of every month starting at 6:30 p.m.

The next event is slated for Sept. 5 at the eatery, 1408 FM 1431.

“It’s still in the works,” said Storm’s manager Wesley Bradley, who started the meet-up in June. “We’ve had it for a couple of months now, and it has about 20 cars show up each time,” he said. “I don’t have any judges, and it’s not a prize contest or anything. It’s just a chance for people to hang out, visit and talk about everything.”

Bradley gives out coupons for free drinks to each classic car owner who comes out to show their vehicle, and said that he has gotten a very positive response from his regular customers who have been lucky enough to be around when the classic cars show up.

Participants are encouraged to bring their vehicles to the west side of the drive-in, with room to spill over into an adjacent parking lot. Destined to remain an intimate gathering, the most the meet-up is able to accommodate on a given Saturday night is 50 vehicles.

Bradley brought the tradition with him when he came over from the Storm’s Drive-In in Lampasas.

The chain has four locations in nearby towns and serves burgers ‘50s style.

Currently the participants in the car show are coming primarily from Marble Falls, though there have been visitors from Burnet, Kingsland and the surrounding areas.

The show is open to classics of the pre-1975 era, with current participants driving cars dating back to the 1930s.

Storm’s hamburgers and fries didn’t become famous until 1944, when Jim Storm owned and operated a diner in San Antonio.

The family moved back to the Hill Country to open The Dairy Cue -- a name that was changed later to Storm’s.

The restaurant is in its 50th year in that first location in Lampasas.
