In a career spanning nearly 30 years, the conceptualist Tom Friedman has been a master of transforming the mundane into the improbable and extraordinary. Among the most celebrated recent works by Friedman are the artist’s objects that blend classic modernist sculpture with a child’s playful constructions. Towering nearly 33 feet high, “Looking Up” is now on permanent display on the Laguna Gloria grounds.

Author Amy Stewart will be at BookPeople to talk about her new book, “Girl Waits With Gun.” The book, inspired by the real-life story of Constance Kopp, one of America’s first female deputy sheriffs, chronicles Constance’s dispute with Henry Kaufman, a wealthy and ruthless factory owner. Set in 1914, the novel pulls from historical headlines that painted a picture of a brave woman who protected her family and stood up to a

Called the “Dean of Texas Artists,” Frank Reaugh sketched from the saddle as a young man in the 1880s, riding with trail drivers during the heyday of epic cattle roundups. The vast Lone Star landscape and the Texas Longhorn cattle quickly became Reaugh’s lifelong artistic inspiration. With more than 200 artworks from the University of Texas’ Harry Ransom Center’s collection, the sweeping exhibit surveys the life and work of the distinguished landscape artist.
