U.S. advances in soccer qualifying
The United States beat Panama 4-0 in CONCACAF Olympic qualifying on Tuesday night in Commerce City, Colorado. The U.S. advanced out of Group A qualifying with a 3-0 mark.
■ The FIFA ethics committee has been examining the cases of President Sepp Blatter and UEFA President Michel Platini in Zurich this week, a move that could lead to the suspension of world soccer’s most powerful officials. FIFA presidential contender Chung Mong-joon says Blatter, 79, is a “hypocrite and a liar,” and that he is planning to sue the outgoing president. Blatter is being investigated by Swiss authorities for financial wrongdoing and has consistently denied any involvement.
Auto racing: Richard Petty Motorsports will continue with Ford as its manufacturer for 2016 and beyond in a deal many thought would not happen. There had been speculation that RPM, which has been with Ford since 2010, would move to Chevrolet to take the slot vacated when Furniture Row announced it was moving to Toyota next year.
Cycling: Lance Armstrong’s former physician, Dr. Michele Ferrari, filed a lawsuit aiming to halt distribution in Italy of a movie about the disgraced cyclist. “The Program” is due to be released in Italy today. Ferrari, banned for life for helping athletes use performance-enhancing drugs by both the Italian Cycling Federation and the U.S. Anti-Doping Association, is played by French actor Guillaume Canet in the film.
