Volleyball team hits stride

Texas State’s volleyball team has won three straight matches, including a four-set home victory over defending Sun Belt champion Arkansas-Little Rock, to reach the top of the league standings.

After a mediocre start, the Bobcats are right where coach Karen Chisum hoped they would be as the heart of the Sun Belt schedule arrives.

The Bobcats snapped Arkansas-Little Rock’s 26-match conference winning streak last week, which was the nation’s longest.

“The streak is over. There’s no streaking in Strahan Coliseum,” Chisum said. “Our girls pushed and pushed and just wanted it more. The kids were confident and were able to keep their energy high. The rivalry between us and Little Rock is a young one, but it’s very heated, so we are excited to get the victory.”

Texas State (11-8, 6-1 in the Sun Belt) kept the momentum going with a sweep of Georgia Southern last Saturday and a five-set win over Texas-Arlington on Tuesday.

In the win over UTA, Jordan Kohl had a careerhigh 24 kills. Kelsey Weynand added 22 kills and 11 digs.

The Bobcats play Friday at Baylor, then play four straight road Sun Belt matches, at Texas-Arlington, Arkansas State, Troy and South Alabama.

Newby goes low: Justin Newby posted final rounds of 66 and 67 at the Sun Belt Preview in Florida, finishing fourth indi- vidually; the Bobcats finished 10th. They head to Houston for the Bayou City Classic on Sunday.

Soccer streak ends: The soccer team’s seven-match winning streak ended Sunday in a 5-0 loss at Appalachian State. It had been the Bobcats’ longest winning streak since 2011. The 8-3 start remains the best in school history. The next four matches are on the road, including Troy on Friday and South Alabama on Sunday.

Cross-country runs well: The cross-country teams competed in the prestigious Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival in Fayetteville, Ark., last Saturday, with the men finishing eighth overall and the women crossing the line ahead of the likes of Baylor and Louisiana-Lafayette. The Bobcats will run Saturday at the UIW Invitational in Live Oak before traveling to Atlanta for the conference championships on Nov. 1.
