Eat at Bullfight and watch 'John Wick'
If you’re a gamer, ‘The Taken King’ warrants your attention.
It’s time for some “A Toast” recommendations from our weekly Austin culture podcast, “Statesman Shots.”
Here are our picks from the last two episodes of the show, which featured comic Brian Gaar, American-Statesman alumnus and the new host of “ATX Uncensored(ish)” on Austin’s CW, and ACL Fest performers Riders Against the Storm.
The new game “Destiny: The Taken King.” An MMO a la “World of Warcraft,” it’s a game that has Gaar geeking out over as he and fellow first-person-shooter players unite to defeat earth’s enemies! Oh, and the graphics are really, really awesome.
Last Gas Comedy. A recently redesigned online hub for all things local comedy, Gaar says this is the go-to site for finding new comic talent, big upcoming shows and event listings for all things stand-up, sketch and improv.
“John Wick.” Now playing on HBO, this Keanu Reeves action movie paints a compelling picture of “Sin City”-esque assassin subculture. “Shots” co-host Omar L. Gallaga says he hasn’t liked Keanu
Reeves this much since the first “Matrix” movie, even though he doesn’t float around and stuff.
Bullfight. This new Spanish tapas-heavy restaurant from local chef Shawn Cirkiel just popped up on Airport Boulevard next to I Heart Video and offers a taste of the Old World, says “Shots” co-host Tolly Moseley.
David Brown, “Texas Standard” host. Omar Gallaga, who does a weekly tech segment on Thursdays for the KUT-produced radio show, has high praise for the show’s host, who does a delicate balancing act every day keeping the show conversational while covering a diverse set of topical, newsy stories. Brown has mastered the art of orchestrating a vast amount of information and making it sound easy. You can check out the show at TexasStandard.org, where audio clips and blog posts are offered right after it airs at 10 a.m. each morning.
Body Rock ATX. Chaka from Riders Against the Storm recommends this monthly music and dance party, which is now happening at Empire Control Room with D J Chorizo. It’s a good place to catch Rid- ers perform and to shake your booty.
“Dear Sugar Radio.” Moseley has high praise for this podcast/radio show that evolved from the brilliant advice column on The Rumpus. She says the hosts, authors Cheryl Strayed and Steve Almond, offer heartfelt, sometimes raw advice on this weekly show.
Tantric education. Riders Against the Storm’s Qi Dada believes young people need to educate themselves on sexual empowerment and discussion in lieu of the raw stuff they find online.
One place to start may be LearningTantra.com, which has a section devoted to sexuality.
