On Sept. 4, while playing against Marble Falls, two Jay High School football players blindsided referee Robert Watts. At a hearing Thursday before the UIL’s State Executive Committee, senior Michael Moreno and sophomore Victor Rojas were banned from participating in UIL events for the rest of the 2015-16 school year. Head coach Gary Gutierrez received a public reprimand and was placed on probation for two years. Jay’s defensive secondary coach Mack Breed, who resigned in September, admitted to venting out loud toward the end of the game but says he never told his players to hit Watts.

Steven Gonzales: It’s done; time to move forward. Assault charges are up to the Burnet County District Attorney and the victim. The coach, perhaps, should face them as well for instigating them.

Kenneth Payne: These two players need to be barred from all sports at the high school level and also face assault charges. They could have broken the man’s back. This is sending a soft message to other players.

Kenneth Matthews: Don’t let them play sports for the rest of their school career, put them in alternative school and don’t let them walk at graduation!

Joe Clark: No prosecutions for aggravated assault? These two players were old enough to know what they did was wrong.

David L. Roberts: Football is just a brutal game. If it was disbanded tomorrow I would not care.

Carrie Soukup: I hope this means colleges look at them and go “no, you can’t play here either.” They don’t deserve scholarships for sports.

John Knoblauch: I’d press charges if I were the referee.

Perry Williams: Suspended? That coach should have his teaching credentials revoked and banned from ever coaching again.
