Cox swims to three victories

But Horns fall to North Carolina in women’s meet.

The second-ranked North Carolina women’s swimming and diving team edged sixth-ranked Texas 154-146 Friday in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The Tar Heels led 143140 heading into the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, and won it by just under a second.

Texas’ Madisyn Cox had three individual victories as the Longhorns won seven events. Cox won the 200 freestyle, 200 breaststro­ke and 400 individual medley.

Texas freshman Joanna Evans swept the long distance freestyle events, the 1,000- and 500-yard races.

Women’s tennis: Virginia’s Julia Elbaba won a tiebreaker to defeat Texas’ Breaunna Addison in straight sets 6-4, 7-6 (5) in the second round of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercolle­giate Championsh­ips on Friday in New York.

The sixth-seeded Elbaba fell in the next round to Ohio State’s Francesca Di Lorenzo 6-0, 4-6, 6-3. Addison had defeated Brienne Minor of Michigan 6-4, 6-2 in the round of 32 on Thursday to advance.

Cross-country: The Texas men’s and women’s cross-country teams advanced to the NCAA Championsh­ips after second-place finishes behind Arkansas at the NCAA South Central Regional Championsh­ips on Friday in College Station.

The men’s team advanced for the seventh straight season with 69 points, just behind the Razorbacks’ 51.

Arkansas won the women’s race with 40 points, and UT had 105 points to advance for the first time since 2012.

The NCAA Championsh­ips will take place Nov. 21 in Louisville, Ky.

Men’s tennis: The Longhorns won three singles matches in the round of 16 at the Country Club of Birmingham Collegiate Invitation­al on Friday in Alabama.

UT’s Julian Zlobinsky beat Alabama-Birmingham’s Oliver Poysti 4-6, 6-1, 7-5, and Texas’ William Jou edged Alabama’s Hayes Brewer 6-1, 1-6, 6-3.

Longhorn Adrian Ortiz defeated Middle Tennessee State’s Ayed Zatar 6-4, 6-1.
