My hunch is that it’s in your father’s emotional makeup to live in the present as a passive participan­t — meaning, whatever his current circumstan­ces offer him, that’s where his attention rests. This trait can be hard to spot in people who serve as your emotional pillars, though; often we see them more for their role in our lives than for who they really are.

And for our expectatio­n that they want to stay close to us.

If he is this way, then maybe he didn’t leave you behind so much as you left him behind to attend to your mother.

That would also mean it’s a simple problem to correct, though: You just need to be steadily present again.

By being with him as you’re able, and by embracing these new family members, you can bring him back to you.
