OLYMPIC CHAMP CARTER AMONG UT HALL OF HONOR INDUCTEES

Gold medalist to be joined by Aldridge, 11 others in class.

Michelle Carter, the shot put champion at the Rio Olympics, is among five former Longhorn women who will be inducted into the school’s Hall of Honor this fall.

The women’s class, announced Friday, has Carter (track and field, 200407), Edna Campbell (basketball, 1989-91), Andrea Hayes (swimming, 1986-90), Lucie Ludvigova Schmidhaus­er (tennis, 1993-95) and Terri Turner (track and field, 198386).

Inductees on the men’s side will be LaMarcus Aldridge (basketball, 200406), Leonard Davis (football, 1997-2000), Aaron Pierson (swimming, 2002-04) and Aaron Ross (football, 2003-06).

Vintage selections Jimmy Blacklock (basketball, 197172), Walter L. “Buddy” New Jr. (baseball, 1961-63), Davis Love Jr. (golf, 1953-55), and special selection John Bianco (media relations, 1992-present) round out the class.

The class will be formally inducted Oct. 14-15.

Women’s basketball: Celina Rodrigo, a point guard in 2012-16, has been named a graduate assistant for Georgia, according to school officials. “I’m excited for this exceptiona­l opportunit­y,” Rodrigo said. “I’m truly blessed to still be around the game that I dearly love and be back in my home state.”

Rodrigo, a Marietta, Ga., native, made 98 starts in her Texas career. Her 134 games played are tied for sixth-most in program history. She finished her career ranked sixth in school history with 454 total assists and 10th in assists average with 3.4 per game.

Rodrigo led the Longhorns in assists in three of her four seasons in Austin, including a career-best 140 her senior season.

She was a 2016 All-Big 12 honorable mention selection and was named to the 2016 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championsh­ip All-Tournament Team. She graduated from UT with a bachelor’s degree in health promotion and was a four-time Academic All-Big 12 selection.

Men’s golf: Texas was named the top team in the country on Friday by the Golf Coaches Associatio­n. The Longhorns received 16 of 25 first-place votes in the Bushnell Golfweek Coaches preseason poll. Southern Cal received four first-place votes and is ranked second, followed by Illinois.

Three Big 12 schools are in the top 10. Oklahoma State is fourth, and Oklahoma is 10th.

Texas will return four golfers from last season’s team that won the Big 12 title and finished second at the NCAA Championsh­ip: senior All-American Gavin Hall and juniors Doug Ghim, Scottie Scheffler and Taylor Funk.
