Volleyball team tops Sooners

The fourth-ranked Texas volleyball team defeated the Oklahoma Sooners 22-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-22 on the road in a Big 12 match Wednesday night.

Micaya White, a UT freshman, had a career-high 26 kills as the Longhorns bounced back after a firstset loss to sweep the final three games. White had 12 digs on her way to her second double-double of the season. She hit .333 for the match and added two blocks and an ace.

Ebony Nwanebu had 17 kills while hitting .444, and Paulina Prieto Cerame added 16 kills for Texas.

Chloe Collins had 54 assists to go along with six digs and two blocks. Cat McCoy and Morgan Johnson defended well, as McCoy had 13 digs and Johnson made four blocks.

Oklahoma (9-6, 0-2 Big 12) utilized a 6-1 run after falling behind 19-18 to take the first set before the Longhorns (11-2, 3-0 Big 12) responded.

Texas will continue Big 12 play on Saturday as it travels to Manhattan, Kan., to face Kansas State at 7 p.m.

Tip-Off at Gregory Gym: The Texas Tip-Off for the men’s basketball team will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 20 at Gregory Gym. Admission to the intrasquad scrimmage is free, but tickets must be claimed in advance via the athletic department website.

The event will give fans a first glimpse at the 2016-17 Longhorns, including top recruit Jarrett Allen and the rest of coach Shaka Smart’s top-five recruiting class.

Tickets will be available to the general public beginning Friday, and seating will be general admission. Doors will open at 6 p.m., with contests, prizes and entertainm­ent provided for early arrivals. Raising Cane’s will provide free food for UT students on a first-come, firstserve basis.

Five-star forward eyes Horns: Brian Bowen, a fivestar basketball prospect in the 2017 recruiting class, included Texas when he narrowed his list of potential schools to six Wednesday.

Bowen is a 6-foot-7, 185pound forward ranked No. 17 overall and No. 1 in Michigan by 247Sports.com. He is from Saginaw, Mich., but has attended La Lumiere School in La Porte, Ind., a national basketball power, since his junior year.

He’s also considerin­g Michigan State, Arizona, UCLA, North Carolina State and Creighton.
