BuzzFeed is latest to offer high praise for Round Rock Donuts

Round Rock Donuts are the best you can find in the Lone Star State, and they stack up against the best in the nation, according to a recent BuzzFeed story.

The social news site ranked the established doughnut shop as tops in Texas, using restaurant reviews and ratings from Yelp to back its claim. Doughnut shops were ranked by the number of reviews and ratings (one to five stars) to compile the list.

More than 1,100 reviewers on Yelp have offered their take on Round Rock Donuts’ tasty confections, with the vast majority giving at least four stars.

Round Rock Donuts are famous for their orange hue — a product of using fresh eggs, according to the shop’s website — and for having a distinct flavor. More than 2,000 doughnuts are handrolled, cut, fried and iced daily at the bakery, and visitors come from out of state to find out if the hype holds up.

In the late ’60s, Texas Monthly tapped Round Rock Donuts as the best in Texas. In 2013, USA Today picked the doughnut shop as one of the top 12 in the nation, and numerous food show hosts have stopped by to learn more about the bakery.

Longtime employee and store manager Polo Garcia said he caught word of BuzzFeed’s story from a co-worker last week. He admitted the news didn’t surprise him much since the doughnut shop has regularly received media attention.

“We hear a lot of things, so you kind of get used to it,” Garcia said. “I don’t want to brag about it, but good comments are always welcome.”

Celebrities are known to stop by the doughnut shop, Garcia said. Recently “The Chew” co-host Carla Hall picked up a doughnut and posed with Garcia for a photo.

As to why so many people have fallen in love with the sugary concoctions, Garcia attributes it to good customer service and a recipe that has stood the test of time.

“It’s a tradition of more than 75 years,” he said, and “it’s the same ingredients.”
