Texas swimmers see mixed success

The Texas women’s swim team won 13 of 15 events and the Texas men’s squad opened its season with seven victories in a dual meet against Florida and Indiana on Friday in Bloomingto­n, Indiana.

Texas’ women defeated the Gators 186-90 and Indiana 170106. The Texas men topped the Gators 185-96 and fell to the Hoosiers 149-132. The teams swam in a long-course format and compete in a short-course contest Saturday.

Texas senior Madisyn Cox and sophomore Joanna Evans led the Horns with two wins apiece. Cox took the 200meter breaststro­ke in 2 minutes, 31.23 seconds and the 200 freestyle in 2:00.41. Evans won the 400- and 800-meter freestyle races.

Texas’ Jack Conger swept the butterfly races, winning the 100 in 53.43 seconds and the 200 in 2:01.08. Texas sophomore Townley Haas claimed the 200 freestyle title in 1:51.29 and helped the Texas men win the 400 freestyle relay.

Men’s golf: The Texas men’s golf team shot 3 over par in the opening round of the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate on Friday in Alpharetta, Georgia, and is tied for fourth place.

The Longhorns trail leader Oklahoma by eight strokes. The Sooners had four players finish in the top 17 and hold a two stroke lead over Duke.

Texas junior Scottie Scheffler had four birdies on the back nine but double-bogeyed the par-5 18th to finish with a 2-under 70. Scheffler is tied for sixth place and is three shots behind leader Jimmy Stanger of Virginia. Stanger had eight birdies Friday and finished with a 67.

UT’s Doug Ghim carded a 71 and is tied for eighth place at 1 under.

Men’s tennis: Texas had six singles players move on to the round of 32 and four doubles teams advanced to the round of 16 on Friday on the opening day of the ITA Texas Regional Championsh­ips in Fort Worth.
